An optional hyphen can be seen if you have nonprinting characters displayed. Without nonprinting characters displayed, you won\’t see it unless the break falls at the end of a line, in which case a hyphen will be displayed. You should not be using a hyphen with inclusive numbers such as dates ; instead you should use an en dash which by default is a breaking character.

Like Stefan, I don\’t understand what trailing spaces have to do with it. If you want to keep all of AD AD on the same line, simply use non-breaking spaces instead of ordinary spaces. Non-breaking spaces are created via Ctrl-Shift-Space. I find your comments re WordPerfect 6 justification strange. In my experience with many documents created over a period spanning at least two decades , it has always reduced the amount of space used by the text, both in the document body and in footnotes, endnotes, etc.

Graham Mayor MVP. In reply to Stefan Blom\’s post on May 12, You can use dynamic guides to align an object relative to another object. Or, you can align an object relative to the center of a slide. Tip: To select multiple objects, hold down Shift , and then click the objects that you want. Drag the object near another object that you want to align it with, or drag the object near the center of the page.

Note: To temporarily hide Dynamic Guides, hold down Command while you drag the object. To arrange a shape or reorder a shape – moving it in front of, or behind, other objects on the slide – follow these steps. On the Shapes tab, select the Arrange button.

On the Shapes tab select the Arrange button. From the Arrange menu select Align , and then what you\’d like to do with the shapes. Move, rotate, or group a picture, text box, or other object. Resize an object. Change the margins between text and the edge of a text box or shape. Change the margins between text and the edge of a text box or shape in Office for macOS.

Align multiple objects Select the objects you want to align. Do one of the following: To align a picture, under Picture Tools , click the Format tab.

In the Arrange group, click Align , and then select one of these commands from the menu: Option Description Align Left Aligns objects along their left edges Align Center Aligns objects vertically through their centers. Align Right Aligns objects along their right edges Align Top Aligns objects along their top edges Align Middle Aligns objects horizontally through their middles. Align Bottom Aligns objects along their bottom edges Important: If the Align options are unavailable, you may only have a single item selected.

This is selected by default. If Align Selected Objects is not available In the document, select at least two objects. Align Top To align the top edges of the objects. Align Middle To align the objects horizontally through their middles.

Align Bottom To align the bottom edges of the objects. When you align objects relative to each other by their edges, one of the objects remains stationary. Align Middle aligns objects horizontally through the middles of the objects and Align Center aligns objects vertically through the centers of the objects. When you align objects relative to each other by their middles or centers, the objects are aligned along a horizontal or vertical line that represents the average of their original positions.

No object necessarily remains stationary, and all of the objects might move. Depending on the alignment option, objects might cover another object. If this happens, undo the alignment and move the objects to new positions before aligning again. Select at least three objects to arrange. Distribute Horizontally To center the objects horizontally. Distribute Vertically To center the objects vertically. Word can align objects to the left, center, right, top, middle, and bottom.

You select whether you want those positions to be relative to the page, the margins, or other objects. Note: If text wrapping for an object is set to In Line with Text , Word can only align it in relation to the page or the margins.
